Animal & Poultry Science

Overview
Animal and Poultry Science is a research-intensive department with successful, related programs for graduate and undergraduate students. Research and teaching focus on the basic sciences relevant to animal development and productivity. Programs and initiatives centre on farm animal species, as well as accommodate companion, zoo and laboratory animals.

Education Programs
Undergraduate programs include both the Animal Science major in the Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) program and the Animal Biology major in the Bachelor of Science program. These four-year programs feature flexibility in course selection, allowing students to tailor programs to suit their needs. The BSc in Animal Biology is a popular choice for students wishing to pursue graduate studies or veterinary sciences.
The Department offers three types of graduate programs: MSc by Coursework, MSc by Thesis, and PhD. Graduate student population is approximately 100 to 120, and includes students from about 30 different countries.
Research Programs
The Department attracts $6-7 million in research grants each year. It has access to extensive research stations and livestock facilities in dairy cattle, beef cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and farmed freshwater fish.
The Department also houses four Centres of Excellence:
- Centre for the Genetic Improvement of Livestock
- Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare
- Centre for Nutrition Modelling
- Aquaculture Centre
