Overview

The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) is dedicated to education, research and practice in the planning, design, conservation, preservation, management and development of cultural and natural environments in Canadian and international settings.

The School provides education and research through three distinct divisions: Landscape Architecture, Capacity Development and Extension, and Rural Planning and Development.

Education Programs

Landscape Architecture delivers a four-year undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) degree and a three-year graduate program (MLA). Both programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.

Capacity Development and Extension offers a range of undergraduate courses and a distance education certificate program in Communication Process. At the graduate level, the MSc in Capacity Development and Extension focuses on development communication, capacity building, communication technology, adult learning, facilitation and leadership.

Rural Planning and Development provides a graduate-level, MSc program designed to provide students with the knowledge and skill to conduct interdisciplinary research and guide processes of change in rural planning and development. Students can focus on either Canadian or international (developing areas) contexts. The Canadian program is accredited by the Canadian Institute of Planners.

The School of Environmental Design & Rural Development is the home department for the PhD in Rural Studies program, which offers two distinct fields of study: sustainable rural communities and sustainable landscape systems.
