Outstanding Faculty Recognized at OAC Community Event

September 28, 2009

Four faculty members in the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) were recognized for their outstanding leadership by the OAC Alumni Association and Foundation at the college’s second annual Welcome Back Barbecue event held on September 22.

“I’m enormously grateful to the Association and Foundation for the leadership they provide in supporting these important faculty awards,” said OAC dean Rob Gordon. “They provide much-deserved recognition of the achievements of a number of individuals within the college, and also provide us with a great opportunity to showcase the overall excellence of OAC’s world-class faculty in their roles as teachers, mentors, researchers and extension specialists.”

Prof. Milena Corredig, a faculty member in the department of Food Science, was announced as the 2009 recipient of the OAC Alumni Distinguished Research Award.  Corredig joined the Food Science department in 2001, and has received numerous research awards, including a Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Food Nanostructures, and an NSERC-Industrial Research Chair in Dairy Technology.

Prof. Ernesto Guzman, a faculty member in the School of Environmental Sciences, received the OAC Alumni Distinguished Extension Award for 2009. This annual award recognizes effective extension efforts used outside the classroom by OAC faculty members. Through his work in research and extension on honeybees, Guzman has made a large and very beneficial contribution to Ontario’s beekeeping industry.

Prof. Alan Sullivan, a faculty member in the department of Plant Agriculture, was presented with the 2009 OAC Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award. Sullivan was recognized for the considerable leadership role he has played in both undergraduate and graduate teaching activities since joining the OAC faculty in 1986.

All three awards were presented by Mark Ostrowski on behalf of the OAC Alumni Association.

Prof. Jim Mahone from the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development was presented with the 2009 G.P. McRostie award. This award, presented by Bruce Christie on behalf of the OAC Alumni Foundation, recognizes the importance of effective advising and mentoring by faculty who play a significant role in the education of OAC students. Mahone, a respected authority on conflict resolution and leadership, was honoured for his active involvement and contributions to the student experience.
