About the Speaker:
Dr. Sandilands is a research scientist at the Avian Science Research Centre at the Scottish Agricultural College. Her research interests relate to housing and management of poultry in ways that are sensitive to their needs while being sustainable in UK farming.  Much of her work is conducted under government grants, but increasingly involves
collaboration with well-known poultry companies, animal welfare organizations, or industry councils. She thinks that in many instances, they are working towards similar goals. Recently, she has investigated whole-house gassing of poultry (particularly topical, in light of recent outbreaks of avian influenza around the world); using a force plate to measure walking style in broiler chickens; and investigating the welfare of nonbeak trimmed hens kept in various colony sizes of enriched cages. Dr. Sandilands is Vice President of the UK branch of the World’s Poultry Science Association, and the current president of the International Society for Applied Ethology.

About the Series:
The OAC Public Lecture Series features distinguished speakers on topical issues related to agriculture, food, the environment and rural communities in Canada and around the world.  The series promotes better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of rapid change and global connectivity.  Developed with support from the alumni and friends of OAC, these lectures are provided free of charge for the University community and the public.
