OAC Public Lecture, November 19

The Fall 2008 session of OAC’s public lecture series concludes on Wednesday, November 19, with the Kenneth R. Farrell Distinguished Public Policy Lectureship.

This year’s lecture will feature Professor Scott Irwin from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who will examine the extent to which speculator behavior has been responsible for rising commodity prices. He will discuss the relevance and impact of such behaviour from an economic perspective, as well as its implications for public policy.


Angel or Devil? The Role of Speculation in the Recent Commodity Price Boom

About the Speaker:
Scott Irwin is Professor and Laurence J. Norton Chair of Agricultural Marketing in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research is focused on agricultural marketing and price analysis, agricultural risk management, performance of market advisory services, forecast evaluation, commodity market efficiency and the behavior of speculators in commodity markets. He currently leads outreach and service projects to evaluate agricultural market advisory services and provide comprehensive risk management information and analysis for US farmers and agribusinesses.

Prof. Irwin holds a BSc in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University as well as MSc and PhD degrees in Agricultural Economics from Purdue.

The Farrell Lectures feature distinguished speakers on current and emerging public policy issues related to food, agriculture, rural communities, natural resource use and/or environmental quality in Canada and beyond.
