High School Students and Teachers Learn About Educational and Career Opportunities in Agri-Food and Business

February 28, 2011

At events in March, OAC will bring together high school students and teachers from Brampton, Halton, Guelph, Orangeville and Waterloo to learn about educational and career opportunities in agri-food and business.

Reach Ahead Days on March 3 and 10 are designed specifically to profile OAC’s department of Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics (FARE) and to support of the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program. About 120 students will tour the campus, interact with undergraduate business students, attend lectures and challenge each other in a business case study competition.  The SHSM program allows Grade 11 and 12 students to focus their studies on a specific economic sector while exposing them to various post secondary pathways, including university, college, apprenticeship training and workplaces.

“The Ontario Agricultural College welcomes the opportunity to support the High Skills Major programs through the Reach Ahead Day events” says Jonathan Schmidt, associate dean (academic).  “We recognize the significant role the High Skills program can play in the education of highly-qualified professionals in the vital environment and agri-food sectors.”

Also on March 3,  OAC, with support from Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) funding under the U of G/OMAFRA partnership, will deliver its second professional development workshop. The event in Milton, Ontario, will connect OAC’s School of Environmental Sciences (SES) with environment SHSM teachers from across the province. Educators will learn about teaching initiatives and resources that support the delivery of SHSM programs and will have the opportunity to engage with each other and with SES’s faculty to share best teaching practices.

“We look forward to hosting students and teachers at our Guelph campus to learn about exciting research and career opportunities and to explore a cross-section of university life" says Schmidt.
